PROVO — The Village at South Campus apartment complex, built by R&O construction company, was named the No. 1 multi-family/hospitality project of the year by the Associated General Contractors of Utah at its annual convention last week.

The complex houses more than 900 Brigham Young University and Utah Valley University students in five floors. It includes two residential towers and a two-story commons area with a swimming pool, fitness area, grocery store and study area. There is a restaurant on the site, and room service is an option. Each apartment houses four people in private bedrooms, and has two bathrooms and a laundry area. The complex consists of 690 parking stalls, enough for about three-fourths of its tenants at any one time. About 590 of those are underground in the one-level parking garage.

The project owner is Peak Capital Partners and the architect was Ken Harris Architects.

The projects are judged on five points: overcoming challenges and teamwork, safety, innovation and contribution to the industry and community, construction quality and craftsmanship, and function and aesthetic quality of the design.

At the Village at South Campus ribbon cutting in August, Jamie Dunn, one of three partners of Peak Capital said “We are trying to bring a higher quality to the student marketplace. Anytime you do a development of this sort there are issues the city and the developer must work through. As we’ve come to the end this has truly been a positive experience.”

The complex sits on the site of the former Joaquin Elementary School and has been in development for several years. The site sat vacant for some years after the original developer went bankrupt. The project finally began moving forward again in 2010.

The Retail Project of the Year award went to the Larry H. Miller Megaplex Theatre at Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, also built by R&O.
